Waymo to add up to 62,000 Chrysler Pacificas to its driverless fleet

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is expanding its partnership with driverless car firm Waymo, supplying up to 62,000 additional Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids to the project. The two companies are also engaged in discussions about licensing Waymo’s AV technology for use in retail FCA cars.

Vehicle deliveries are scheduled to start in late 2018, coinciding with Waymo’s plans to launch its self-driving transportation service that will allow the public to use Waymo’s app to request a vehicle.

Waymo currently operates its AVs without a safety vehicle in Phoenix, Arizona, and has been granted a permit to also do so on some California roads.

“Waymo’s goal from day one has been to build the world’s most experienced driver and give people access to self-driving technology that will make our roads safer,” said John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo.

“We’re excited to deepen our relationship with FCA that will support the launch of our driverless service and explore future products that support Waymo’s mission.”

“FCA is committed to bringing self-driving technology to our customers in a manner that is safe, efficient and realistic,” said Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. “Strategic partnerships, such as the one we have with Waymo, will help to drive innovative technology to the forefront.”
